A comprehensive guide to Shanghai's elegant colonial-era residential area.
Sinan Mansions is a collection of elegant colonial-era villas and gardens located in the former French Concession. Many famous historical figures once lived here, including writers, artists, and politicians.
Today, Sinan Mansions has been transformed into a cultural and commercial center with upscale boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, and cafes. The beautifully restored buildings retain their original charm while offering modern amenities. It's a perfect place to experience old Shanghai's elegance and contemporary culture.
Sinan Mansions is home to 51 historic villas showcasing 8 distinct architectural styles, making it a "living museum" of Shanghai's modern architecture. Each building has a QR code that provides audio guides telling stories of its famous former residents. In autumn, the golden plane tree leaves create a magical atmosphere—perfect for photos in cheongsam or vintage suits, capturing that classic "In the Mood for Love" elegance.
Don't miss the Starbucks Reserve nestled in a 3-story villa, famous for its attic seat where actor Zhu Yilong was photographed. For culture lovers, Sinan Books (517 Middle Fuxing Rd) was converted from Feng Yuxiang's former residence, featuring maze-like bookshelves and a peaceful "solo reading corner."
History buffs should visit Zhou Enlai's Former Residence (73 Sinan Rd), a free 3-story house covered in ivy (closed Mondays), and Mei Lanfang's Former Residence (87 Sinan Rd), preserving the charm of the Peking Opera master's Republican-era home.
The images on the right show the Sinan Mansions building map, Sinan Books, Zhou Enlai's Former Residence, and Mei Lanfang's Former Residence.
